Riding Through the Sky: My Experience on the Chiba Urban Monorail
If you ever visit Chiba City in Japan, there’s one unique experience you shouldn’t miss—the Chiba Urban Monorail. It’s not just any public transit system. It’s officially recognized as the world’s longest suspended monorail, stretching over 15.2 kilometers. Instead of running on tracks beneath the train, this monorail hangs from the rail above, gliding through the air like something out of a sci-fi movie.
A Smooth Ride Above the City
What makes the Chiba Monorail so special is its suspended design. The trains are literally hanging from overhead rails, offering a smooth and quiet ride above the city streets. It’s a surreal experience, especially if it’s your first time on a suspended monorail—you really feel like you’re floating!
As you can see in the photo I took, the train looks like it’s just hovering in the air. Some trains are even wrapped in cute designs, often featuring animals or local mascots, which makes them fun to spot and ride—especially for families and kids.

If you look closely, you’ll notice the Japanese sign on the front of the train: ワンマン (“One-man”). That means the train is operated by a single driver without conductors, thanks to an advanced automated system. Pretty cool, right?
